ne of them said "I want to be a cock"! ！！！
Now, many foreign words that are used in Japanese come from Dutch and German such as "molmotto" (guinea pig) which is marmot, or "penki" (paint) which is "pek", or "arubaito" (part-time job) which is from "arbeit", or "dema" (false rumor) that is demagogie.
The word my student used "cock" (chef) comes from "kok" in Dutch. I told the kids to say "chef", or maybe "cook" if they are not too ambitious, instead -- they looked shocked when I explained the reason!
So please ladies and gentleman, if any young Japanese kid tells you he/she wants to be a cock, be understanding!
I had a Japaense girl friend whoes name is "Saiko" but she was quite normal! Language can be tricky!
先日、将来の夢を英語で練習しました。ある子がなんと！"I want to be a cock" と言ったのです。cockは元々は雄鶏 (ちなみに雌鶏はhen) という意味でしたが、現在では男性器を指します。子供たちにそう説明するとびっくり。現在では雄鶏はroosterが一般的です。
ご存じのとおり日本語には外来語としてドイツ語由来のものが沢山あります。モルモットmolmotto、アルバイトalbaito、ペンキpek、デマdemagogieなどがあり、コックはkokです。
ちなみにshef とcookの違いはランクにあります。Shefは指導する立場にある有資格者でメニューも考案します。Cookは調理する人です。I want to be a cookは子供が「夢」として言うには少し寂しいかもしれませんね。
さて、友人に彩香（さいこ）ちゃんという名前の子がいました。英語でサイコはpsycho、もしくはpsychopath 精神病質者、変質者、狂人という意味になります。もちろん友人は普通の女の子でした！
ちなみにカンタス航空は「クワンタスエアー」と言ってください。くれぐれも「カンタスエアー」と言わないでください。
「シドニー」の発音もお気を付けください。こちらではあえては書きませんが、両方とも変な意味になります。小学生や中学生の男子が大喜びしてしまいそうなので！
言葉はややこしいですね。
